Permulaan imamah Imam Husain bin Ali as bersamaan dengan tahun ke-10 pemerintahan Muawiyah.Muawiyah pada tahun 41 H/661 . setelah perjanjian damai dengan Imam Hasan as, ia mengambil pemerintahan dan membangun dinasti Umawiyyah.Sumber-sumber literatur Ahlusunah menilai bahwa Muawiyah adalah seseorang yang cerdik.
